LOOP’D
ENVD 1110
December 2023
Combining ambient lighting and accessible storage into a single sculptural object.
Designed for spontaneous connection and intentional gathering. DUO transforms between seating and table configurations, adapting to the changing ways people share space.
01
Problem & Concept
How might I design a luminaire that provides both ambient lighting and tabletop storage for college students?

Sketches & Process
Exploring form and function through sketching, model making, and iterative refinement

04
Materiality
Baltic Birch Plywood
Integrated LED Strip
Rice Paper Light Cover
Natural Linseed Oil Finish
05
Fabrication
Originally planned to CNC route each layer, but the machine was out of service. I pivoted to hand fabrication using a jigsaw and refined each step to ensure precision and a clean final result.
01
Hand Cut Layers
→
Hand-cut 3/4” baltic birch plywood profiles created the foundation of the form.
02
Lamination & Shaping
→
Layers were laminated, aligned, and sanded together to achieve a seamless geometry.
03
Lighting Integration
→
A laser-cut MDF channel houses the LED strip, while rice paper diffuses the light.
04
Finish with Linseed Oil
The lamp was finished with linseed oil to highlight the plywood’s natural character.
06
Final Photography
More than a lamp, Loop’d functions as a display object, organizer, and source of ambient light. Its layered geometry creates visual interest while providing practical storage for everyday essentials.
